Ancient religions of astrolatry popularized the belief people possess immortal souls that could be separated from their bodies at death and ascend to the heavens. This formed the basis for necromancy, astrology, astral projection, the belief in reincarnation, "ascended masters", and many forms of nature worship (pantheism).
